Lesson #1 from Joe Paterno: “Potential Ain’t Worth S#!t.”

Joe Paterno is credited with saying that about a linebacker he took a pass on….according to legend, JoePA didn’t see him as a worker. And, apparently, JoePa was right because the dude had physical skills but became a Juco washout. (Note: I originally heard that story at one of the Mike Ferry [...]

Taking My Own Medicine - Best Answers to Life’s FAQ

One of the things I advocate is having solid, “best practice” answers to questions that you get every time. These “answers” want to get into and have for myself. Over the next few weeks, I’ll write, and RECORD some of the best answers I can think of to the obvious questions:

How [...]

Frugality, Thrift, and Success

Don’t believe the hype: you aren’t wasting money on rent.
You gotta live somewhere, right? And that’s gonna cost money, right? So what’s the difference if it goes to a landlord, a housing complex…or a big bank? Banks have done a fabulous job convincing us all that paying a landlord is [...]

How Sarcasm is Hurting Our Generaion

Sarcasm is a staple of our generation.

“That’s just perfect” or…”This is fan-tastic.”

Someone saw this blog, and I was greeted with a cutting remark: “boy, I wish I had that kind of time.”

Well, maybe. We don’t have a TV in our house, you’d be surprised by what kind of hours are freed up by [...]

Its a sin, faith, and grace.

By request.  I’ll take these down in a week or so so the RIAA doesn’t sue me.
Anyway, enjoy.

What is a friendship based on?

Something that I’ve been concerned with–lately especially–is what a friendship is based on?   Is it based on the way people make you feel when you’re around them?  How they help you focus on your goals (God/Work/Family)?   The easy comfort that comes from acceptance (don’t judge me)?   The past experiences shared together?  The promise of what [...]

This coming week.

I finished “the Origin of Brands,” by Al and Laura Reis.

It is persuasive and compelling–the gist is this:  You will survive if you have one idea/theme/product and are congruent with it.  As a Realtor and as a Mortgage Lender, I’ve always been afraid to limit myself, to narrow my market too much.

I was originally–in 2003–going [...]

“the holy grail of”

Al and Laura make a great point:  almost anytime a product says it’s the “holy grail” of something, it’s generally a bad idea, poorly executed.  Any time the press favors something, it’s usually a “new combination,” that is basically an inconvenient version of two other products.

Think: AOL+Time Warner.

Think: DiamlerChrysler.

Exceptions abound, but any “holy grail” product [...]

Undervaluing personal relationships.

I’m not going to begrudge myself my natural bias towards numbers, and towards reality.  Numbers help, they tell the story.  Goals are made up of numbers, and a lot of goals are measurable.  If something matters to you–really matters–you’ll wind up doing more of it.   If going to church is important to you, go to [...]

My goals are here, and this is the more or less short term stuff that I’m working on.
