Why I Want To Help.
Hi, I'm very glad to see you. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. I also podcast at New Market Survival Guide and I ALWAYS appreciate comments. Thanks for visiting--this message will go away after the third or forth time you're here.
[[My mind is racing as today at 2pm, we're adding a baby girl to our family. GenuineWife and I will be going to riverside. Feel free to visit if you're in Columbus, to see a tiny human. My boy is almost three, I called him precocious. He said, "Daddy, I'm not really 'cocious. I might be a TINY bit cocious, but I'm definitely not PREcocious. Being a dad has been an unexpected joy in my life, and I'm eager for more. If what follows is incomprehensible gibberish, give me some slack, as I've been excited and thrilled all week long]]
The “R” Stands for Ridiculous
The real estate industry is the laughing stock of America right now. Some of the stuff is deserved (i.e. the NAR creating a culture of entitlement and not service, as if emblazoning an “R” on your jacket makes you anything other than Ridiculous). The NAR is still not trying to help people by giving them good information–they are just pissing away the remaining trust people have for their community real estate agents, and making it harder to do the job of selling homes. Anytime an association you’re part of lies, they hurt your chances. At best the NAR is incompetent. At worst they are dishonest. In either case, nobody wants to associate with either the incompetent or dishonest, right? Its’s patently obvious, and who is going to trust the NAR with ‘housing facts.’
The NAR has license laws, and trade association laws to artificially protect the existence of the organization. In Ohio, if your broker wants mls access he must join, and state law is such that if you’re an agent, and your broker is an association member, you must be as well. Using fiat to grow your ranks is against everything that I’m about, and I was a Realtor for 3.5 years despite my intentions–the law required that I fork money over to a bunch of people that their best interests at heart. I concluded that the $700 extortion was a small price to pay to be part of an incredible industry.
What’s Right About The Industry:
The existence of the ridiculous NAR must be some sort of reversion to the mean. The individual agents that make it up are often fantastic. They are often winners, and they are often INCREDIBLE people. The spark of humanity that makes people leave the dull and unsatisfying corporate existence–and take a shot–any shot–at a different life is EXACTLY the flame I want to fan. The idea that you can roll up your sleeves, work smarter and harder and better to forge a place in the market for yourself…in a system where people have come before…that’s the American Way. When our country was a nation of entrepreneurs, instead of employees…we did some great work. And with Generation Y coming in and embracing the entreprenuership creedo as much and as well as they have, I’m truthfully excited for our future.
These are the people–the mortgage brokers, realtors, and small business owners that are 100% worthy of my attention, and help, and everything we can do to help. Someone that wants to add value and sell the service or perception of service is 100% worthy of my time and my energy and my efforts. And yours, too. It’s not horrifically difficult to succeed in this business. The path has been laid out there by many great people. This market has many NEW demands that we have to accommodate, and an individual can’t improve at the same rate as before.
This industry needs to accept the fact that change must come much faster. We have to respond to and deal with relevant feedback much faster. We must improve the rate we improve on a regular basis, and find ways of doing it better, and expecting change in the future. I’ve learned that, yes, old school techniques still work well. The web works, too.
How can you not support an industry that has, at it’s core, the desire for improvement? How can you not wish to be around and extend a hand, either through excellent service, or comradery?
How awful are the people that try to hurt the industry?
