As a consequence we've kept ourselves out of trouble as I tend to plan for the worst. It's good to keep things in perspective, however. The spouse, kids, health, etc., is what's important. On our death beds, we're not gonna give a crap about money, the IRS, bankruptcy, etc., but we will look back on the relationships most important to us and the impact we had in those lives.
