The question is this: how do you take your life seriously without taking yourself seriously??
When we up the ante on intensity and focus, you have to power through normal resistance. You are steeling yourself to a task, spending the spark of the divine that we all have on some particular purpose. Hopefully, it matters. Hopefully, your purpose is congruent with the life you want, and not just a windmill to tilt at.
When we fight resistance, and when we decide to bear the tension it takes to remake the world, we can easily become too serious. We can easily make it so that we are then vain and we confuse the task at hand with ourselves. We can’t take a little ribbing, or we snap and lash out at people that mean no harm.
We overreact to mild distractions and inconveniences because we are now intensely steeled to a task. How then can we have lightness, and mirth and good humor when we’re climbing big mountains? Life is about the journey, and no kingmaker or lady in the lake will be doleing out arrival notices. The trick, then is to keep it measured while we’re on the journey. To put every bit of our souls into something…but still to put ourselves beneath the task.
Look at our task.
Look at how we treat others.
How do we balance them? How do we live with kindness and compassion and still maintain purpose and integrity?
Or is it true that balance is bullshit?
