I have a private list on Twitter called “content heroes.” These people push out great, usually free, content often in their niche. I follow them avidly and devour everything they make. There are 21 names on that list, a few of ‘em are: Brian Clark, Chris Garrett, Michael Martine, Sonia Simone, Chris Brogan, Hugh MacLeod, Nametag Scott Ginsberg, Ian Greenleigh, Jim Kukral and Dave Navaro. These dudes are my trusted filters and my daily news.

Success Leaves Clues: Figure Out Why They Are Successful

I’m grateful that our economy is so good that it supports the work of these people to the point where they can pump out stuff for free and for cheap. I’ve made money off of the free and cheap stuff. Some specific examples:

Chris Brogan’s Trust Agents: Found it too long, but it gave me a vocabulary that I didn’t have and inspired me to set a good example of doing things above board. (His Overnight Success stuff is pretty promising, too). This has lead to me approaching clients with giant balls.

Nametag Scott’s intimidating mass of content: Scott’s showed me lots of things. Morning pages, which I do a lot.

Brian Clark’s “Authority Rules:” That’s sold clients for me. I’ve emailed that pdf and persuaded people to buy a blog or get some planning done.

Dave Navarro’s Blog: Holy crap. Talk about action items. Probably the best “free” stuff on the entire Internet.

Everyone I follow leaves clues. I’m profoundly grateful, and feel lucky and fortunate that these dudes can profit from giving free stuff away. Because the ideas I see that I dig, I synthesize. I use as my own. As is their intent.

It didn’t used to be that way. I used to be hyper and angry about it. I used to want specific and a step by step guide to my own success. For free. I used to get angry because I hadn’t learned the mindset that makes success inevitable. I was on some lists that had 3/4 good content that I could take action on.

I Deserve More, More: I’m Entitled.

But when a dude had the audacity to try to sell me something or send me an affiliate link? Oh, hell no. That was un-fuggin-acceptable to me. Mentally, I was lost. “This dude is just trying to sell me, screw him.” I was mad about being used, being monetized. Despite the good content, the fact that there was some portion of it that was interested in making money, I was enraged. I would unsubscribe.

It was about me. How dare this dude try to monetize me. How dare they try to do something to me. Nevermind the fact that I got great content (that I wasn’t ready to act on). This sumbitch tried to sell me? How DARE HE!

Why was I mad? Bottom line: I was broke, confused and lost. I was pissed because the world was passing me by, I didn’t have enough to give, so I didn’t have the cash to jump on good ideas. I was mad because I wanted the stuff that I was being sold, but $160 or more was out of reach. My entitle mentality made things about me. Get it?

Entitlementality is cancer of the will.

OK, let’s be really, really clear. When you are focused only on what you’re getting, how your own experience is, you’re going to fail. You’re so limited by those ideas that it’s nearly impossible to succeed. When you’re focused on how much you deserve, and you turn your eyes inward, you’re gonna get a close up view of your faults and flaws. Your ego will reject them and put the blame on others.

You can’t survive with this mindset. You are here and born to give something, not get something. Gratitude is the chemotherapy that kills entitlementality. Instead of being pissy about the valid efforts of good people to earn their living, why not simply be happy that you got some ideas, why not be ready to take action on the good stuff you’ve gotten?

Left untended, though this is a natural process. You focus on yourself, we all do. It’s a poison we swallow that is so very limiting. What about helping others? What happens when you give all you can to that? I’ll tell you what: you succeed financially, especially when you let go of the self righteous “all I do is focus on others” line that people that don’t really focus on others give you.

When you kill your entitlementailty, you can finally succeed. You will have a hard time doing anything good without accepting the fact that you’re paid in proportion to how much you’re been of service to others. With very few exceptions, bubbles and anomalies, that’s how the world works. Embrace that idea and up your service. The “How” is on its way.

Let me admit something: I’ve been reluctant to promote other people’s products. I could do what Chris does, and Promote the HELL (emphasis his) out of thesis. I believe in Thesis (a lot). But, the bottom line is this: I don’t want to promote anything bad that someone has done. I don’t want to be held accountable and dissipate my credibility with any member of my audience for $40-50 bucks.

I’ve had people sign up with Aweber through my affiliate link. I’ve done this because I want cache with Aweber, not because the revenue is significant. I have, thus far, not gotten a check from them, and when I do I will donate it somewhere cool.

That is changing.

I’m going to start doing some affiliate marketing very soon. And I’m going to do it differently. This, I call Affiliates With Integrity.

Only the best products. I’m never gonna need the $$, so I’m only going to sell what I have paid for.

Nothing Comped. I won’t do an affiliate product if I’ve been comped for ANYTHING ever.

Non affiliate & affiliate links from the site. Just because I don’t want people to feel like they have to buy from me.

100% guarantee for all affiliates: If you bought via my affiliate link, I will guarantee your purchase 100%. That is how I roll. If you have ANY problems getting a refund, tell me about it, and I’ll make sure you get refunded.

Only stuff I’ve bought & Used. If I haven’t paid for it, I won’t recommend it. If it’s crap., I won’t recommend it.

I want to maintain your trust, and I want to talk a little about the good Ideas I’ve paid for. Freelance X factor fits. (No affiliate links)

Affiliate marketing won’t ever be a significant source of revenue. But, I want to participate in the programs and start building pages for other people’s stuff. I want to round out my education as an internet marketer, and why not do it with good stuff?

Five People I Would Drop $200 Because They Told Me To.

Nametag Scott Ginsberg- Scott has never let me down yet with recommendations of books and music. I believe that he gives a crap about what he slings out there. And I do believe that if he said, “Johnson, you GOTTA go buy this,” I’d be a moron not to.

Michael Martine- WordPress SEO secrets was solid as hell. He also put me in contact with How To Launch the **** out of your E-book by Dave Navaro, which was worth every single penny that it sold for.

Brian Clark- Let’s see, I’ve referred my clients to the Thesis theme, I’ve bough teverything but the Teaching Sells course that he’s sold lately. I’ve yet to be let down. He cares too much to putz around with a bad product.

Cristina Favareau- Solid advice, solid work. She’s never sold anything that I know of, but if she said, “hey Chris, this is $200 bucks, and I think you should have it,” I’d totally take a flier.

Pamela Wier.- Dude, nicest person on the planet. Solid copywriter/designer. She’s got EVERYONE’s best interest at heart. If you want good copy, go to her. IF she said that I needed to get this course, I’d do it. (She’s paid for dozens of internet marketing courses & is completely realistic about it).

I want to make sure that I earn and keep trust. I won’t ever do affiliate stuff that’s undisclosed. I will, however, take advantage of the affiliate programs that pay well.

I also hate HATE the KKK. Of the organizations they are 1 and 1a in terms of “totally evil, but sadly, must be legal.” That whole libertarian streak

I’m going to use these vile organizations to help me lose weight. Stay with me here, I know it’s a stretch.

How To Use People You Hate For Goals You Want:

I’ve been in an accountability group for a while. I’ve been focusing on selling 100 blogs. That goal is on pace. The one that’s not, though…I’ve gone through it in fits and starts, and it’s been an interesting journey for me. Right now, I’m trying to lose 40# in 100 days. About 40 days in, and I’m only down about 9 net pounds, and all of that was from a couple of weekends. I’m doing better-but-not-great at the dinner table. I’m doing badly at getting to the gym. Flat out badly. I need to work out more. Nothing has worked–my intentions are good…but between sleep training Ruby and everything else, I’m just not making it. So let’s fix it with something that MUST work.

So, I had an idea. What if a kitten would die if I didn’t work out. Sadly, both PETA and I agree with the premise that kittens shouldn’t die if I don’t work out.

So, I had another idea: what if I lost money from not working out. (Note: when you’re less attractive, you lose money) So I wrote out a check to a few friends, and told them the score: I don’t work out, they cash the check. Still, it doesn’t have the STING that I want. Because I’m helping friends out. And it’s a perverse incentive.

So, I thought: first, time I miss the gym it’s a warning. I get a check written out to a couple of friends and they cash it. The SECOND time.

Well, let’s just say that I become the Grand Wizard of NAMBLA.

So, 4 checks. All with instructions: Cash this if I don’t prove that I got to the gym. First check goes to my friends. The second check? That goes to NAMBLA or the KKK.

They BETTER do it. Phil? Jesse? Counting on you. They’ve been sent SASEs. I gotta go to the gym man.

I’ll probably up the ante a little bit and make a picture of my ‘food diary’ become necessary.

Anyway, the rule is this: I gotta prove that I was at the gym, or these puppies get cashed.

I gotta do this till October 1st…then the checks I will void.

Bottom line: I get one day off a week, either Friday or Sunday, but not both. I’ve got to post a video by 1am the next morning on Youtube proving that I was at the gym. I don’t know of a practical way to prove a workout, but this is good. I’ll also be taking a picture of what I ate and putting it here. All this is in the sidebar to the right. Please subscribe. Rat me out. I’m tired of the excuses.

My Gym is urban active, and here’s the first video I got:

These little accountability videos will show up in the side bar. I’ll do the vids with my crappy Blackberry. I would rather have a PXL 2000, but this will do. Join me at http://www.youtube.com/user/accountachris to track my progress and encourage me not to deal become the Grand Wizard of Nambla.

Oh, also: if I go to run at the woods, that counts, too, but I gotta find a stranger to say what day it is and go on video. Should be fun.

Showing up, fully engaged is a big part of work. Being a machine, like Seth Godin, like NameTag Scott is the way to have wild success, wild wealth, and more of what you want. The quality of your ideas is less important–by far–and less novel–by far than the execution.

Ideas are everywhere. Execution is 90% of it or more. “Idea guys” are worthless. Utterly entitled useless pieces of crap. The idea isn’t the novel thing, and the older and presumably wiser I get the more I know it. It’s easy to have a dazzling idea, a new and novel thing that you could make some day.

It’s hard to get up every day, look people in the eye and serve them with all of your heart, mind, mind, soul & strength. It’s hard to show the patience and confidence you need. It’s easy to be the smart kid, it’s easy to be the one with the answers. It’s hard, really hard, to show up every day and have the enduring faith that it takes to work towards your goal, especially when instant results are out the window.

How many exciting, great ideas have you had that would be AWESOME if they were put into practice?

How many NBA players had roughly the same physical gifts as Michael Jordan (Dominique Wilkins, Charles Barkley, Anfernee Hardaway) but didn’t hit the same heights? MJ’s mental gifts were far more novel than his physical gifts.

Right now, I’m trying to learn to develop the consistency needed to get past the ‘next level’ and go to the one beyond that. It’s not about intellect, acumen or acuity, it’s about just blocking out distractions and doing it. It’s about getting up and rolling. Not getting-ready-to-roll. Preparation has its place, but only in moderation.

Lots of little things help. Keeping a list helps. Clearing a schedule helps. Paying a little bet on a debt every day helps. Morning pages helps. I’ve come farther along than I thought possible. But I need to be hitting it hard.

How do you create consistency? Are you really doing it? Are you being honest with yourself?

Ideas are everywhere, and without execution totally worthless. A mediocre idea executed with passion and fervor will beat the hell out of genius ideas that sit in drawers.

So, to date, I’ve sold 12 Blogs, delivered another $3500 in freelance projects, and gotten INCHES to the goal of getting extricated from the IRS’s clutches. By Inches, I mean it should happen in or before June. then I can hammer the rest of the stuff out.

But let’s be honest–I’ve barely made it to the gym. I’ve not gone much this month, and I’ve gained 2-3 pounds. That’s gotta change–today. Monday kicked ass, I hit the gym early. I pounded out some great work.

So, to get where I need to be, I gotta hit the gym every day–preferably in the morning–this week.

And I gotta use the Wii Fit every day at night for 30-40 minutes.

But the good news is this: I can still hit the goal of 8# gone this month, it’s nto too late if I hustle.

So it’s time to hustle. First day this week I miss the gym I’ll have a new fun challenge for y’all.

That is to say, I’m not fully in compliance and I have a mid-five figure balance. Right now, I’m making income. Right now my blogs are getting things done, and my blogs are selling. I’m punching my way out, and I’ve put together a few eggs.

But, those eggs, see, they made me nervous. The new revenue officer has found some dough.

And I spent most of Thursday trying to figure out how to hide what I had. Take it out, put it in a safe, whatever. It’s appocolypse money, trade for silver and gold money, yano?

Well, the novel idea struck me: I owe more than I have. Why not just embrase the worst possible thing. They get my money. Not like they’re not getting it anyway. So what.

Now, I can earn it all back. Now, my balance with the IRS is less than 20k. Now, I can earn that in a month, AND support my family. Now, I’m free because they ain’t comin’ after it. There’s nothing for them to take. I put my faith in God, if you will, and cast my lot with my ability to outhustle the collapse.

Because, kids, let’s face it, the silver, the little I got ain’t gonna be jack. Getting levied? Who cares. Bring it on. Doesn’t matter.

I can earn my way out of anything in the world.

I can solve any problem because I’m not a victim.

So what do you fear? What’s the worst thing that cam happen? If the economy gets bad, fast, what then? Chances are, you’re making excuses by worrying too hard.

More soon, man. More to come. But take your punches, don’t avioid ‘em. Chances are they won’t hurt that bad, and the mental worst case scenario is worse than the actual one.

I’m going to get back to posting my Goals on Google Docs on monday.

The main metrics are as follows:

+30 Thesis Blogs Sold.

40 Guerrilla.ME accounts opened.

100 Copies of my Book sold.

45 videos made for Guerrilla.ME & Thesis Blogging.

$7500 month in the rest of freelance business (closing out existing pipeline….stop doing one off jobs).

8 Pounds shed. (Been far off the wagon in that area)

Now, I’m gonna post about this stuff almost every day here, I’ll probably exclude it from the feed except weekly by finding some category driven plugin to do that.

There have been some serious bummer growing pains in moving from selling blogs at $2,000 to $750. I’m still committed though. The bummers:

Expectations: My original article didn’t say what I would get done. People expected everything from an identity package and letterhead (!) to a much more refined look that comes from multiple revisions. So I’ll say it now: Custom Header, Cusotm Color Scheme, Custom clean look….plugins and analytics set up, good checklist. Thanks to Mark Shandrow for finding and using Thesis Open Hook. For some reason, it Fubar’d the fist time I installed it, and never went back, but now it works well.

Videos: The first batch of videos were utter crap. Not really, but I was stuttering more than Rain man and they didn’t have the pop or polish I’d want. So I scrapped ‘em. I started doing ‘em again, this time with Screen Flow instead of Snap Z, and holy hell…what more can I do. The problem is that the production takes longer. I think it’ll be worth it…but I’m a little stuck on making ‘em perfect instead of getting ‘em done. There’s a serious “OMFG its COOL factor with ScreenFlow….but I dropped the ball HARD on the videos this week, stopped selling for a while to try to get caught back up…and am daunted by the task.

Paid Wall I envisioned this as a membership site, I got WP-Wishlist to run it, and then realized that this was a chore. So I moved everything to rightrightnow.com I planned on having both the ‘guerrilla.me’ and the ‘thesis blog’ videos there, but it makes more sense to have that stuff all live at http://guerrilla.me. The camo makes it look and feel more like a traning environment and initially I can sell more Thesis Blogs than Guerrilla.MEs. The paid wall ate me up, and I should have dumped the videos to a 100-200 MB file and delivered.

Script: I need a script that works with thesis to install it and the plugins automatically.

Pricing: Existing Blog Hosts Gotta figure out if I want to migrate/upgrade existing blogs. ALL the problems with DNS/Hassle were with people that I upgraded with existing blogs.

The downside of doing ‘products,’ is the lonliness in the start.

I love achieving something. Breaking a BHAG down into tiny bites. The wheels came off my life this week because of some seriously sweet distractions, some opportunities that were unexpected, and because I moved into my kicking new office. And frankly, because I let complacency back in and rested on my imaginary Laurels. F#@% that. I got behind because I was doing more writing than usual, and that is something that simply takes time. Enough. 2nd Quarter is here, and it’s time to kick ass. I’ll pay no mind to those that resist me by ignoring me.

Anyway, this will be a six part series in how to make goals with Google Docs, it’s all I’m going to run this week. This is the prelude, running Sunday.

How To Set Achievable Goals

Think bigger. I’m not saing decide to be an astronaut, but everyone has a sense of what they COULD accomplish if they did whatever they could in a big way. We know that we could lose X pounds, sell X widgets, whatever. And a lot of people decide to let the clutterpeople in their lives set goals for them. When I was at First Ohio Home Finance, the owners out and out laughed at my goals. Don’t let others set them. My goals are huge–as youl’ll see at the bottom of the post.

Make it hyperspecific. My goal: lose 25#, or do 300 sales of F#@% Therapy …is spefic. It’s got steps. “Be an astronaut,” is not a specific goal. It’s also not, “Get inlinks” for F#@% therapy. it’s SELL F#@% therapy. i may need inlinks to do it…but I don’t care if I don’t get ‘em. That’s why my website at http://rightrightnow.com is awful.

I’m going to set and hit some goals, and I’m going to make it seriously public. There’s a lot that I intend to do, but the core stuff: Ftherapy , Right Right Now, Guerrilla.me are my primary projects. Those things need to perform at consistent levels, Right Right Now is the company I run freelance business through. Note: it has–at best–a bad website. Finishing the website is something that i’m indifferent towards. I can get by without it….because I’m 80% Twitter and WOM.

Break it down: I don’t believe in annual goals. I believe in–at most–quartelry goals broken down monthly…then weekly You can get away from an annual goal fast. After the quarterly goals get broken down, you look at weekly and daily behaviors that lead to goals. You’ll see my sidebar get relaunched with the goals I’ve got this week.

Start with quarterly, break it to monthly, then weekly, then daily, and figure out what you have to do. Ignore everything else, and just focus on the stuff that gets you to the next deal.

Here are qnd quarter’s goals. I’ll break the rest down for you in a bit, how to measure and track ‘em. For now, I’ll leave you with this.

2Q09 Goals and Predictions:
—
End Goals:

Ftherapy: 1200 total sales (I get 17$/per) ($20,400)

300 april
400 may
500 June

Right Right Now: (My Freelance Projects)

$45,000 in gross revenue, netting out $27,000 to me. (60%)
Keep the work quick and small, no big projects.

Average ticket is 1800 right now: 25 gigs needed. (I should reduce average ticket also)

Guerrilla.me:

250 total sales @ $300 Average Sale = $75k. Affiliates Avg: 20%. $60k left, cost of execution ~$6,000ish Split $54 50/50= $27k.

Launch Freelance Sales How to: (Name TBD)

$69.00/month
10 clients in May
+10 in June

Acquire net +20 retainer/monthly revenue clients. (500/month for one on one coaching using GOTOMEETING) $10,000/month

Lose 25# (10 in april, 8 in May 7 in june) Been plateauing for a quarter. Time to bust that. I’m 55# over where I want to weigh, and I carry it OK.
Refile 06, 05 taxes.
Cut total debt down by 20%.
Pay all ‘08 tax liability & get current on ‘09 with q1 and q2 accurate estimates filed.
Family: 1 date a week with my wife
1 day a week with Just The Kids so the Wife Can Stay Semi Sane (tracked, checked off)
1 time hanging with Jack/week.
1 time hanging with just ruby/week.

If you’re not willing to be passionate about a goal, give it up. You can’t win the game by going halfway to war. You’re just going to frustrate yourself, and spend time doing things that don’t energize you, don’t make you better, and dissipate your energy. WHEN you focus on something that doesn’t matter to you, you will be less likely get a decent outcome. That means whatever energy you spent on it will be put into a sieve, and just burned up, and wasted.

Focus Only On What You’re Passionate About

Instead–focus on the few goals that you’re passionate about, for the real reasons. I’m passionate about a few of things: 1. helping people be independent and free from big institution collectivism, 2. getting fit, 3. raising my kids to be kind, generous world beaters. (Under these ideas are things that I gotta do, and sub goals and projects that I’m working on, but nothin’ really matters beyond this). Nothing else should matter. Any connection, flirtation, other part of that is probably a distraction. Any other goal (earn $50,000 a month) might be nice, but it’s not a focal point unless it supports the other goals.

For a long time, I (and maybe you) have focused on all the ‘nice to have,’ BS goals, and I didn’t hit them with any regularity. Partly because I wasn’t willing to be passionate about it. The word passion’s origin from Late Lattin: physical suffering. Do you want your goal so bad that you’ll give up something for it? That you’ll work your ass off? That it’s more important than food, sex, sleep? If not, then you probably don’t want it that badly. If not, it’s not at the core of your being. And if not, you gotta figure out how to connect with the stuff that really matters, nto the stuff you want to matter.

You can’t win by going half way to war. You’ll lose, you’ll be beaten because you have to give up everything to the goal. Having something that would be nice someday isn’t going to get you there. Simplify, drop from your list some things that don’t matter, and focus harder on the few things that do matter.

Easier said than done, I know, but doing starts with saying, with writing, and it’s time for me to put that together.

The enduring memories that we have that we live for. The time we were able to push ourselves to run a marathon, to do our jobs better…peak experiences are why we’re alive. Some of ‘em are found at work. Some of the things that we live for are in our jobs, but some things have nothing to do with the loan business. Peak experiences leave us with a permanent mark, changing us for the better. And let’s be honest. Making money is fantastic, it’s fun, but it’s not an end-all be-all. Having an extra $600 bucks from a closing in your checking account isn’t the point.

…the freedom money allows is the point.

The reason we’re in this business is to fuel those peak experiences. That’s it. The reason we do what we do The picture you see is e on May 1 2008. I’m holding my brand new baby daughter, Ruby. A peak experience to be sure, she was born healthy and happy. Raising my son, shown on the right is the most joyful and important thing that I’ve done.

Not Every Peak Experience is found at work! The work that we do–even in the mortgage business–can make it so we can be around for more and more peak experiences. If we are ALWAYS having things that change us for the better, exposing ourselves, pressing ourselves, and doing whatever we can to have new and better experiences…life becomes a fulfilling playground of wonder and joy. And that’s what L.O.S.T is all about. I created a program that was going to give you more Peak Experiences.

Know Your Peak Experiences

Often, the worry about money, the worry about ego driven “junk” can hide from us what the peak experiences we’re after really are. We elevate other things that don’t matter, and we strive for stuff that doesn’t really make us tick because we think we oughta have it. Some people who don’t care about cars buy a Mercedes. Some people that don’t care about houses buy a big house. These decisions are made because they do what others do, they don’t take JUST a moment to figure out and connect with what really turns them on.

The business planning that we do at Loan Officer Survival Training STARTS with YOUR peak experiences. We anchor how you spend your day in such a way that you always are weeks away from what could be a peak experience.

Sometimes peak experiences cost (i.e. Christmas shopping in Manhattan), and you need to arrange your budget to include them. Sometimes, Peak Experiences don’t cost much at all (taking my kid to the park, playing baseball with him). The point is, we need to have a peak experience to look forward to.

What If I Don’t Know What My Peak Experiences Are?

Be adventurous. Try new things. What might your peak experiences be? What do you think you’ve always wanted to try to learn? Don’t think about what other people are doing–what turns YOU on?

What are the best memories that you have?

What things do you want MORE of in your life?

What things do you want to have in your life?

What is going great right now?

Spend some time thinking about this–how can other people be served by your peak experiences?

You’ll come across goals that really charge you and really turn you on when you’re always asking the question: what next?
